Seven years after Francesco’s gesture of stripping off his clothes, Chiara of the noble and rich Offreducci family flees home to join him at the Porziuncola where the Poverello makes her hair cut and wear the Franciscan habit. Then he took refuge in the Church of San Damiano, where he founded the female Order of the \u00abpoor recluses\u00bb, the Poor Clares, obtaining from Gregory IX the \u00abprivilege of poverty\u00bb<\/p>\n

Born in Assisi in 1193, she died there at sixty years on 11 August 1253 and two years later she was canonized by Pope Alexander IV. She is the patron of television; its name, from Latin, means “transparent, illustrious” and has the lily as its emblem. The main church dedicated to Chiara is the Basilica of Santa Chiara in Assisi, where her remains are preserved. The only cathedral dedicated to the Saint, instead, is located in the town of Iglesias, in Sardinia.<\/p>\n

Fleeing from wealth<\/strong>
\nChiara is just twelve years old, born in 1194 from the noble and rich family of the Offreducci, when Francesco d’Assisi made the gesture of stripping off all his clothes to return them to his father Bernardone. Conquered by the example of Francis, the young Chiara seven years later, on the evening of Palm Sunday in 1211 or 1212, escapes from home to join him at the Porziuncola. The Saint cuts her hair and puts on her Franciscan habit, then leads her to the Benedictine monastery of St. Paul, in Bastia Umbra, where her father tries in vain to persuade her to return home. He then took refuge in the Church of San Damiano, in which he founded the female Order of the “poor recluses” (later called Clarisse) of which she was named abbess and where Francis said a first Rule. Chiara subsequently wrote the definitive Rule asking and obtaining from Gregory IX the “privilege of poverty”<\/p>\n

He does not accept discounts on poverty<\/strong>
\nCardinal Ugolino, bishop of Ostia and protector of the Minor, gives her a new rule that reduces poverty, but she does not accept discounts: thus Ugolino, who became Pope Gregory IX (1227-41) grants her the “privilege of poverty”, then confirmed by Innocent IV with a solemn bull of 1253, presented to Chiara a few days before his death. Patroness of television<\/strong>
\nOn 17 February 1958 it was declared by Pope Pius XII as the patron saint of television and telecommunications. According to one tradition, in fact, on Christmas day, in the Mass served by Francesco, there was no Chiara, as she was bedridden because of her illness. Wishing to participate in the celebration anyway, the chronicles tell that a vision of the Mass appeared to her and, at the time of the communion, an angel appeared before her who gave her the possibility of communicating to the consecrated host.<\/p>\n

The Eucharistic miracle<\/strong>
\nChiara distinguished herself for her worship of the Eucharist. Twice Assisi was threatened by the army of Emperor Frederick II who included Saracens among his soldiers. So sagt einer der Briefe (hier in moderner \u00dcbersetzung) an Agnes von Prag, Tochter des b\u00f6hmischen K\u00f6nigs, eine strenge \u00c4btissin eines Klosters, das vom franziskanischen Ideal inspiriert ist. Chiara schickt ihren z\u00e4rtlichen und ausdr\u00fccklichen Rat: “Ich bitte Sie, sich in der fast \u00fcbertriebenen und unm\u00f6glichen Sparpolitik, in der ich wusste, dass Sie angefangen haben, mit kluger Diskretion zu moderieren.” Agnes sollte sehen, wie Chiara wei\u00df, wie sie ihren kranken Schwestern selbst die bescheidensten und unangenehmsten Dienste leisten kann, ohne ihr L\u00e4cheln zu verlieren und ohne ihn zu verlieren.<\/p>\n

Patronin des Fernsehens<\/strong>
\nAm 17. Februar 1958 wurde es von Papst Pius XII. Zum Schutzpatron des Fernsehens und der Telekommunikation erkl\u00e4rt. Einer Tradition zufolge, am Weihnachtstag, in der von Francesco abgehaltenen Messe, gab es kein Chiara, da sie wegen ihrer Krankheit bettl\u00e4gerig war. In der Chronik steht, dass sie trotzdem an der Feier teilnehmen m\u00f6chte, dass ihr eine Vision von der Messe erschienen ist, und vor der Kommunion erschien ein Engel vor ihr, der ihr die M\u00f6glichkeit gab, mit dem geweihten Wirt in Verbindung zu treten.<\/p>\n

Das eucharistische Wunder<\/strong>
\nChiara zeichnete sich durch ihre Anbetung der Eucharistie aus. Zweimal wurde Assisi von der Armee von Kaiser Friedrich II. Bedroht, zu der auch Sarazenen geh\u00f6rten. Zu dieser Zeit wurde Chiara mit dem Ciborium, in dem sich das Allerheiligste Sakrament befand, zu den Stadtmauern gebracht. Ihre Biographen sagen, dass die Armee bei diesem Anblick die Flucht aufgegeben habe. Dieses Ereignis wird jedes Jahr in Assisi mit dem “Fest des Gel\u00fcbdes” der Poor Clares am 22. Juni feierlich gefeiert.<\/p>\n
