However, this first series of explosions ceased rapidly; a new paroxysmal phenomenon, this time much more intense, began on the 19th, with more intense explosions (such as to make homes tremble) and abundant ash emissions that obscured the sky of the entire region for days and caused heavy accumulations in all surrounding villages. The ships also encountered ash after 4 years of eruption in the form of floating pumice islets.<\/p>\n<p>Three months of similar convulsions caused a decrease in altitude of 1,300 meters in the Tambora; from the more than 4,100 original meters, the mountain had passed to the current 2,850.
