THE ABBEY OF SAN GALGANO<\/strong>. The complex, formed by the hermitage called “Rotonda di Montesiepi” and the great abbey now in ruins, is located in the municipality of Chiusdino, about thirty kilometers from Siena. The foundation of the site revolves around the conversion of the knight and future saint Galgano Guidotti, who after a disordered life decided to retire to a hermit’s life.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Arrived on the hill of Montesiepi, on Christmas day of the year 1180, he planted his sword in the ground to make a cross. The history of the sword in the rock, still preserved in the hermitage, shows clear affinities with the legends of the Arthurian cycle that have not failed to arouse curiosity. The abbey was built from the first half of the 13th century by order of the bishop of Volterra Ildebrando Pannocchieschi. Finally, the church was consecrated in 1288.<\/p>\n

Sixty years later, however, the plague epidemic that hit Tuscany and Europe struck the community of monks hardly, and from that moment on, the complex took the path of rapid decline. In 1576 it appears that only one monk resided there. Subsequent restoration work proved to be useless so that in 1789 the church, now collapsed in several places and without a roof, was definitively desecrated and abandoned.<\/p>\n

LA ABAD\u00cdA DE SAN GALGANO.<\/strong> El complejo, formado por la ermita llamada “Rotonda di Montesiepi” y la gran abad\u00eda ahora en ruinas, se encuentra en el municipio de Chiusdino, a unos treinta kil\u00f3metros de Siena. La base del sitio gira en torno a la conversi\u00f3n del caballero y futuro santo Galgano Guidotti, quien despu\u00e9s de una vida desordenada decidi\u00f3 retirarse a la vida de un ermita\u00f1o.<\/p>\n

Llegado a la colina de Montesiepi, el d\u00eda de Navidad del a\u00f1o 1180, plant\u00f3 su espada en el suelo para hacer una cruz. La historia de la espada en la roca, a\u00fan conservada en la ermita, muestra claras afinidades con las leyendas del ciclo art\u00farico que no han dejado de despertar curiosidad. La abad\u00eda fue construida a partir de la primera mitad del siglo XIII por orden del obispo de Volterra Ildebrando Pannocchieschi. Finalmente, la iglesia fue consagrada en 1288.<\/p>\n

Sin embargo, sesenta a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, la epidemia de peste que afect\u00f3 a Toscana y Europa golpe\u00f3 apenas a la comunidad de monjes, y desde ese momento, el complejo tom\u00f3 el camino de un r\u00e1pido declive. DIE ABTEI VON SAN GALGANO.<\/strong> Der Komplex, der aus der Einsiedelei “Rotonda di Montesiepi” und der gro\u00dfen, heute ruinierten Abtei besteht, befindet sich in der Gemeinde Chiusdino, etwa drei\u00dfig Kilometer von Siena entfernt. Das Fundament der St\u00e4tte dreht sich um die Bekehrung des Ritters und zuk\u00fcnftigen Heiligen Galgano Guidotti, der sich nach einem unordentlichen Leben entschied, sich in das Leben eines Einsiedlers zur\u00fcckzuziehen.<\/p>\n

Als er am Weihnachtstag des Jahres 1180 auf dem H\u00fcgel von Montesiepi ankam, steckte er sein Schwert in den Boden, um ein Kreuz zu schlagen. Die Geschichte des Schwertes im Felsen, das noch in der Einsiedelei aufbewahrt wird, zeigt deutliche Verwandtschaft mit den Legenden des Arthur-Zyklus, die immer wieder Neugier geweckt haben. Die Abtei wurde ab der ersten H\u00e4lfte des 13. Jahrhunderts im Auftrag des Bischofs von Volterra Ildebrando Pannocchieschi erbaut. Schlie\u00dflich wurde die Kirche 1288 geweiht.<\/p>\n

Sechzig Jahre sp\u00e4ter traf die Pestepidemie in der Toskana und in Europa die M\u00f6nchsgemeinschaft jedoch kaum, und von diesem Moment an ging der Komplex den Weg des raschen Niedergangs. Es scheint, dass 1576 nur ein M\u00f6nch hier residierte. Die anschlie\u00dfenden Restaurierungsarbeiten erwiesen sich als nutzlos, so dass die 1789 an mehreren Stellen und ohne Dach eingest\u00fcrzte Kirche endg\u00fcltig entweiht und aufgegeben wurde.<\/p>\n
