More evidence found in South Africa supports the hypothesis that a meteorite or asteroid hit the earth 12,800 years ago, causing the global extinction of many species of large animals.<\/p>\n

The team, led by Professor Francis Thackeray of the Institute of Evolutionary Studies at the University of Witwatersrand, discovered evidence of a remarkable “Platinum Peak” on a site called wonderkrater in the province of Limpopo, north of Pretoria in South Africa.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Working with researcher Philip Pieterse of the University of Johannesburg and Professor Louis Scott of the Free State University, thackeray discovered this evidence of a core pierced in a peat deposit, especially in a sample of about 12,800 years.<\/p>\n

This survey was published in the African Paleontology magazine. When observing that the meteorites are rich in platinum, thackeray said in a statement: “our finding at least partially supports the very controversial hypothesis of impact of younger dryas (ydih). We must seriously explore the opinion that an asteroid impact from some parts of the world may have caused global climate change, and to some extent contributed to the extinction of large animals at the end of the Pleistocene, after the last ice age “.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Many mammals have been extinct in North America, South America and Europe at the time of the younger dryas or recent dryas. In South Africa, some extraordinary species of large animals became extinct, not necessarily exactly 12,800 years ago, but close to this period. This megafauna includes a giant African buffalo, a large zebra and a very large wildebeest.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Human populations may also have been affected indirectly at the time in question. In North America there is a dramatic termination of the stone instrument technology of the Clovis people. Surprisingly, archaeologists in South Africa have found an almost simultaneous completion of the stone artifact industry associated with people in some parts of the country, including the area around boomplaas near the cango caves in the south of the Cape, near the city of Oudshoorn.<\/p>\n

“without necessarily discussing a single causal factor at the global level, we cautiously suggest the possibility that these technological changes, in North America and the African subcontinent, more or less at the same time, have indirectly been associated with an asteroid impact with global consequences “says thackeray. “We cannot be sure, but a cosmic impact may have affected humans due to local changes in the environment and the availability of food resources, associated with sudden climate change.”<\/p>\n

At Wonderkrater, the team has evidence of pollen showing that about 12,800 years ago there was temporary cooling associated with the “Younger dryas” temperature drop which is well documented in the northern hemisphere, and now also in southern Africa. According to some scientists, this cooling in large areas could at least potentially be associated with the global dispersion of atmospheric platinum-rich dust.<\/p>\n

A large crater 31 kilometers in diameter was discovered in northern Greenland under the hiawatha glacier. “There is some evidence that supports the opinion that it was possibly the place where a large meteorite hit the planet earth 12,800 years ago,” says thackeray. “if this were the case, there must have been global consequences”.<\/p>\n

The thackeray team believes that his discovery of a platinum peak about 12,800 years ago to wonderkrater is only part of the vision that an asteroid or cometary impact could have happened at that time.<\/p>\n

This is the first evidence in Africa of a platinum peak preceding climate change. Younger dryas peaks have also been found in Platinoen Greenland, Eurasia, North America, Mexico and recently also in pilauco in Chile. Wonderkrater is the site 30 in the world for such a test.<\/p>\n
