A tokamak (Russian acronym for “toroidal magnetic chamber”) is a toroidal (donut-shaped) machine in which a gas (usually hydrogen) hot and rarefied (in the plasma state) is kept cohesive and away from the inner walls thanks to a magnetic field created by electromagnets outside the chamber. Under appropriate conditions, it has been shown that it is possible to create the conditions for controlled thermonuclear fusion within it, in order to extract the thermal energy produced and produce electricity. Recently [when?] Excellent results have been achieved with the JET, and new results are expected from the entry into operation of ITER. By requiring an enormous amount of energy to operate the confinement electromagnets, and the auxiliary reactor systems, the plant’s capacity to produce more electricity than it consumes remains to be demonstrated.<\/p>\n
The magnetic configuration known as ‘tokamak’ is the result of research conducted in 1950 by Russian scientists Andrei Sakharov and Igor Tamm, although the name dates back to 1957. In October 1950 they completed the first evaluations of the parameters necessary for a nuclear fusion reactor: Igor Kur\u010datov then supported them when, in 1951, Stalin decided to start the studies on nuclear fusion in the Soviet Union. The basic idea of \u200b\u200bthe Tokamak was in fact to confine a gas at high temperature, completely ionized (in the plasma state), with electromagnetic fields, to obtain energy from controlled nuclear fusion.<\/p>\n
In the West this configuration was unknown, as fusion research was kept secret: in the same period, in the United States Lyman Spitzer, at the laboratories of Princeton, New Jersey, studied the configuration known as stellarator. It was only in 1955 that the United States discovered the existence of the Tokamak at the International Conference on the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy in Geneva, and only at the Second Geneva Conference (1958) were details of how to build a machine known. based on the Tokamak principle.<\/p>\n
In 1968, at the third IAEA (International Conference on the Use and Control of Plasma and Nuclear Fusion) in Novosibirsk, Russian scientists announced that they had reached an electron temperature of over 1 000 eV in a tokamak (1 electron volts equals 11 605 kelvin). This routed British and American scientists, who were far from achieving such benefits. They remained suspicious until the tests were carried out with the laser, confirming the temperature actually reached by the Russians.<\/p>\n
Since these performances were superior to those obtained until then, the scientists continued the fusion tests using the tokamak, even if alternative configurations (like the stellarator) are still the object of study. The Tokamak is in fact considered as one of the most promising ways to generate energy through nuclear fusion: some of the largest fusion experiments, such as the JET, FTU in Frascati and ASDEX in Europe, JT-60 in Japan, TFTR, DIII-D and Alcator C-mod in the USA are Tokamaks. Finally, an FGFFGF is also the ambitious ITER fusion proto-nuclear reactor project, whose construction (in Cadarache, France) was approved on 21 November 2006.<\/p>\n
The gas mixture present in the tokamak is generally composed of two isotopes of hydrogen: deuterium and tritium. The plasma gas mixture is completely ionized and therefore controllable, exploiting the Lorentz force, through suitable external electromagnetic fields.<\/p>\n
Magnetic fields are of three types: externally induced toroidal and vertical fields and poloidal field generated by the plasma itself. The first, generated by means of toroidal coils, allows to generate a direct field around the symmetry axis of the torus that constrains the charged particles to flow along that direction. The second, generated by means of coils, allows the control of the position of the plasma inside the torus. The third ensures the balance of the plasma.<\/p>\n
The plasma to reach the conditions of thermonuclear fusion must satisfy particular conditions expressed in detail by the Lawson criterion (even if it is more appropriate, in the sizing of the tokamaks, to use the ignition criterion). To reach these conditions an important factor is the temperature of the plasma, due to the raising of which very high plasma energy is transmitted through various techniques, among which are to mention: ohmic heating, the introduction of high energy particles as well as irradiation of electromagnetic fields at the resonance frequency by means of radio frequency (RF) antennas.<\/p>\n
In a tokamak, an initial vacuum is created by pushing vacuum pumps to create a high or deep vacuum. The plasma current in the toroidal container is turned on in three times:<\/p>\n
current is introduced into the toroidal field coils;
\nthen, a very small quantity of gas is introduced (generally hydrogen or its isotopes) whose properties we want to study.
\na current is introduced into the central solenoid, which occupies the central hole of the torus (see figure to the side), creating a flow in the core of the Tokamak: it constitutes the primary circuit of a transformer, of which the torus constitutes the secondary circuit;
\nthe current in the primary is rapidly lowered, and this creates an electromotive force. Neutral atoms are ionized, a discharge is created with electrons that are more and more numerous due to the impact of electrons and neutral atoms.
\nthe gas is no longer neutral, but has become plasma: at this point the electric current, due to the Joule effect, heats the plasma to very high temperatures (a few million degrees).<\/p>\n
If the gas introduced into the Tokamak is a mixture of deuterium and tritium, one can then study the thermonuclear fusion reactions of plasmas by recreating in some ways the environment inside the stars. The hope is to obtain the ignition of the plasma, a phenomenon that would self-sustain, in order to extract energy from nuclear fusion, an energy that leaves no radioactive waste nor is it liable to explosions or radiation leaks and in this sense is a completely “clean” energy. Working in ignition conditions (ie the operative condition in which the power of the confined charged particles alone is able to sustain the conduction, convection and Bremsstrahlung losses) although it seems advantageous from the energy point of view, since it is not necessary to supply any external heating power for stabilizing the fusion plasma, is inconvenient from the reactor control point of view since it would depend exclusively on the dynamics (turbulent and stochastic) of the plasma. Normally, therefore, the advantages of the ignition condition are sacrificed, still providing a part of the heating power externally (auxiliary power) to control the plasma.<\/p>\n
