WWI. A story that has nothing to envy to adventure and espionage films. An intrigue where Italian intelligence managed to defuse a network of Austrian spies and flankers who operated sabotages in our peninsula. All this was born from a series of suspected “accidents” that began on September 27, 1915 when, in the port of Brindisi, one of the best Italian battleships, the “Benedetto Brin”, blew up and caused the death of 454 sailors. On August 2, 1916 in the port of Taranto it was the turn of another battleship, Leonardo da Vinci, with another 270 dead.<\/p>\n
These were accompanied by a series of apparently inexplicable disasters such as the destruction of an explosives factory in Liguria, a fire in the port of Genoa, a steamer blown up in Livorno, the damage to the Terni hydroelectric power station and the flames in a hangar of airships in Ancona. Malice was now clear and it took about two years of investigations by the Royal Navy to come to grips with the sabotages.<\/p>\n
An Italian was intercepted who was in the process of undermining the Marmore dam and a second compatriot who was “operating” near two power plants. Pressed, the two revealed that they had acted behind lavish monetary compensation paid by the Austrians and that the basis from which the directives were based was the Austrian consulate in Zurich in the person of the diplomat Rudolph Mayer, a corvette captain. The Italian services placed the diplomatic building in Switzerland under surveillance with the aim of penetrating it as soon as conditions permitted.<\/p>\n
In turn they managed to bribe an Austrian agent who, in addition to important information, will also give the Italians the casts of the locks of the various doors that would lead to the safe. A skilled blacksmith, Remigio Bronzin, was hired, who was able to reproduce the duplicate keys needed for the operation. The operational team was composed of the Trieste engineers, Salvatore Bonnes and Ugo Cappelletti and the sailor Stenos Tanzini. He also needed a good burglar and the choice fell on Natale Papini who served a prison sentence for robbing a bank. It was not difficult to persuade him with the promise of subsequent liberation.<\/p>\n
It was decided to act on February 22 in full carnival. The commandos entered the Austrian consulate at night and opened the doors with false keys to get to the safe. And here is the first setback: there was one more door that the Austrian informant believed was always open, operation canceled. After getting the missing cast, he tried again two days later, on February 24th. This time everything seemed to go smoothly and we arrived at the safe which was attacked with a blowtorch.<\/p>\n
But here is a poisonous gas leaking from the hole operated by the Italians which fortunately does not catch our men unprepared as they continue their work with wet rags on their mouths. It will take a few hours for the documents contained in the safe to come into possession, which will allow the entire spy organization in Vienna to be dismantled in a very short time.<\/p>\n

Bosheit war jetzt klar und es dauerte ungef\u00e4hr zwei Jahre, bis die Royal Navy die Sabotagen in den Griff bekam.<\/p>\n Ein Italiener wurde abgefangen, der dabei war, den Marmore-Damm zu untergraben, und ein zweiter Landsmann, der in der N\u00e4he von zwei Kraftwerken “operierte”. In der Presse gaben die beiden bekannt, dass sie sich f\u00fcr eine verschwenderische Geldentsch\u00e4digung der \u00d6sterreicher eingesetzt hatten und dass die Grundlage der Richtlinien das \u00f6sterreichische Konsulat in Z\u00fcrich in der Person des Diplomaten Rudolph Mayer, eines Korvettenkapit\u00e4ns, war. Die italienischen Beh\u00f6rden haben das diplomatische Geb\u00e4ude in der Schweiz \u00fcberwacht, um so schnell wie m\u00f6glich in das Geb\u00e4ude einzudringen.<\/p>\n Im Gegenzug gelang es ihnen, einen \u00f6sterreichischen Agenten zu bestechen, der den Italienern neben wichtigen Informationen auch die Abg\u00fcsse der Schl\u00f6sser der verschiedenen T\u00fcren geben wird, die zum Safe f\u00fchren w\u00fcrden. Ein erfahrener Schmied, Remigio Bronzin, wurde eingestellt, der in der Lage war, die f\u00fcr die Operation ben\u00f6tigten doppelten Schl\u00fcssel zu reproduzieren. Das operative Team setzte sich aus den Triester Ingenieuren Salvatore Bonnes und Ugo Cappelletti sowie dem Seemann Stenos Tanzini zusammen. Er brauchte auch einen guten Einbrecher und die Wahl fiel auf Natale Papini, die eine Gef\u00e4ngnisstrafe verb\u00fc\u00dfte, weil sie eine Bank ausgeraubt hatte. Es war nicht schwer, ihn mit dem Versprechen einer sp\u00e4teren Befreiung zu \u00fcberzeugen.<\/p>\n Es wurde beschlossen, am 22. Februar im vollen Karneval zu handeln. Die Kommandos betraten nachts das \u00f6sterreichische Konsulat und \u00f6ffneten die T\u00fcren mit falschen Schl\u00fcsseln, um zum Safe zu gelangen. Und hier ist der erste R\u00fcckschlag: Es gab noch eine T\u00fcr, von der der \u00f6sterreichische Informant glaubte, sie sei immer offen, die Operation wurde abgebrochen. Dieses Mal schien alles reibungslos zu verlaufen und wir kamen zum Safe, der mit einer L\u00f6tlampe angegriffen wurde.<\/p>\n Aber aus dem von den Italienern betriebenen Loch tritt giftiges Gas aus, das unsere M\u00e4nner gl\u00fccklicherweise nicht unvorbereitet erwischt, wenn sie mit nassen Lappen im Mund ihre Arbeit fortsetzen. L’\u00e9quipe op\u00e9rationnelle \u00e9tait compos\u00e9e des ing\u00e9nieurs de Trieste, Salvatore Bonnes et Ugo Cappelletti et du marin Stenos Tanzini. Il avait \u00e9galement besoin d’un bon cambrioleur et le choix s’est port\u00e9 sur Natale Papini qui a purg\u00e9 une peine de prison pour avoir vol\u00e9 une banque. Il n’\u00e9tait pas difficile de le persuader de la promesse d’une lib\u00e9ration ult\u00e9rieure.<\/p>\n Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d’agir le 22 f\u00e9vrier en plein carnaval. Les commandos sont entr\u00e9s dans le consulat autrichien la nuit et ont ouvert les portes avec de fausses cl\u00e9s pour se rendre au coffre-fort. Et voici le premier revers: il y avait une porte de plus que l’informateur autrichien croyait toujours ouverte, op\u00e9ration annul\u00e9e. Apr\u00e8s avoir obtenu le casting manquant, il a r\u00e9essay\u00e9 deux jours plus tard, le 24 f\u00e9vrier. Cette fois, tout s’est bien pass\u00e9 et nous sommes arriv\u00e9s au coffre-fort qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 attaqu\u00e9 au chalumeau.<\/p>\n Mais voici un gaz toxique s’\u00e9chappant du trou op\u00e9r\u00e9 par les Italiens qui, heureusement, n’attrape pas nos hommes non pr\u00e9par\u00e9s alors qu’ils continuent leur travail avec des chiffons humides sur la bouche.
