Vittoria Dall’Armellina was visiting the Museum of San Lazzaro degli Armeni in Venice when her attention was drawn to a small sword, placed in a showcase along with medieval objects. In the attentive eyes of the Cafoscarina doctoral student, what had caught his attention did not seem like a medieval find, but a much older sword, very similar to others already encountered in his studies.<\/p>\n
His Master’s thesis and then his doctorate focused on the birth and development of the sword in the ancient Near East. In fact, the sword was typologically very similar to some weapons dating back to about five thousand years found inside the Royal Palace of Arslantepe (Eastern Anatolia), considered the oldest swords in the world.<\/p>\n
After this discovery, which became famous in the archaeological world, a sword of the same type was also recognized at the museum in Tokat (Turkey), coming from the region of Sivas. It also has significant similarities with the specimen of San Lazzaro.<\/p>\n
Having ascertained that the sword was not present in the catalog of near oriental antiquities preserved in the museum of the Armenian Island, in agreement with Elena Rova, professor of Archeology at the Department of Humanities and his doctoral supervisor, Dall’Armellina continues the investigation for verify his intuition and clarify the many dark points of the discovery.<\/p>\n
Scientific analyzes confirm: the sword is similar to the oldest in the world, which date back to 3000 BC, not only in shape, but also in the composition of the alloy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n An Anatolian weapon, therefore, reappears completely by chance in Venice re-emerging from the deep darkness of time that had swallowed it for millennia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n But what was your story? How had it arrived in the monastery and what could be the link with the community of the Armenian Fathers? To whom had it belonged and in which distant lands had it traveled? Who had brandished it? Or who had been buried with it?<\/p>\n To answer these questions, the researcher had a valuable collaborator: Father Serafino Jamourlian, from the Mechitarist Monastery of San Lazzaro degli Armeni, who, by consulting the museum’s archives, helped to reveal a part of this very long history.<\/p>\n The journey of the sword We know that Ghevond Alishan, a famous poet and writer friend of John Ruskin, a monk of the Mechitarist congregation and a passionate archeology scholar, died in Venice in 1901. The story therefore probably lies in the last decades of the nineteenth century. The accompaniment ticket to the sword served as Ariadne’s thread to reconstruct the journey to Venice, giving the scholars an important information on the Anatolian origin.<\/p>\n This is the ticket text:<\/p>\n Mr. Yervant Khorasandjian, who lived in Trebizond, sends Father Ghevont (Leonzio) Alishan as a gift, through Father Minas Nurikhan, a Mechitarist monk, founder and director of the Mechitarist College of Trebizond (1882-1894), a bronze sword, found near Trebizond, and precisely in Kavak.<\/p>\n The dating (about 3000 BC) and the origin of the sword The sword of San Lazzaro degli Armeni, like the rest of the other similar examples in existence, was found to be of arsenicated copper: an alloy frequently used before the spread of bronze (copper and tin alloy).<\/p>\n This data and the marked resemblance to the twin swords of Arslantepe found in a well-documented context have allowed the finding to be dated with confidence between the end of the fourth and the beginning of the third millennium BC. and to confirm its relevance to a rather rare typology.<\/p>\n At the present state of studies, those types of swords are widespread in a fairly restricted region of eastern Anatolia, between the high course of the Euphrates River and the southern coast of the Black Sea. The analysis of the elements in trace may further specify the origin of the metal from a specific deposit.<\/p>\n The sword, unlike some of the specimens from Arslantepe, does not have any decoration: it does not show any inscription, any frieze, any distinctive sign.<\/p>\n Due to suboptimal storage conditions, it was not possible to detect any traces of use on it. It could therefore be both a real offensive weapon, actually used, and a parade weapon or an object of funeral equipment.<\/p>\n One possible hypothesis is that it had been laid in a burial, accidentally found by the inhabitants of a local village, whose equipment would have subsequently been dismembered, as unfortunately frequently happened until a few years ago.<\/p>\n In fact, it is precisely in the era when the sword dates back that in Eastern Anatolia and in the neighboring region of the Caucasus we witness the spread of tombs that present rich kits composed of weapons and jewels, interpreted as evidence of the birth of a new warrior-style elite.<\/p>\n The history of the ancient sword is therefore still shrouded in mystery which will now be the task of scholars to investigate.
