In reality there is no evidence of this practice, which would have affected some Sardinian regions such as Marghine, Planargia and Gallura. The practice was not to be remunerated by the patient’s relatives since paying to give death was contrary to religious and superstition dictates.

Historical description
Legend has it that the killing practices used by the femina agabbadora varied according to the place: enter the dying room dressed in black, with the face covered, and kill him by suffocation with a pillow, or hitting him on the forehead with an olive stick (su matzolu) or behind the nape with a sharp blow, or again strangling it by placing the neck between its legs. The most renowned instrument would be a kind of wooden hammer (see Ethnographic Museum Galluras in Luras).

There is no historical unanimity on this figure: some anthropologists believe that the femina agabbadora never existed. There is no evidence of the female agabbadora as such, but of women who brought comfort in families where there was a dying man, accompanying him until the last moment. They helped in agony and gave support, therefore they were respected by the whole community, but they did not kill as it seems to have happened elsewhere (in Greece). All this could be explained with the Sardinian custom of the fantastic tales in order to instil fear “sos contos de forredda” (the hearth tales), since usually the place of the narration was by the fire of a fireplace. Popular credulity would do the rest. It is reported that during the 1900s there were the last three practices of a Female Agabbadora: one in Luras (1929), one in Orgosolo (1952) and one in Oristano, which is also home to a hospital. Nowadays, those who believe in these stories justify them by citing the problems of past times, including the difficulties of moving the patient to isolated countries and very distant from any hospital because the family of a non self-sufficient person encountered problems of assistance.

Some authors [who?] Do not describe a club as the main tool of the agabbadora, but a small miniature yoke that was placed under the pillow of the dying man, in order to alleviate his agony. This is explained by one of the main reasons why it was believed that a man was forced to suffer a slow and painful agony at the point of death: if the spirit did not want to detach itself from the body, it was clear the fault of the dying man, who had stained himself with a shameful crime, had burned a yoke, or had moved the limiting terms of the property of others, or had killed a cat.

Another ritual that was performed was that of removing from the room of the dying person all the sacred images and all the objects dear to him: it was believed in this way to make the detachment of the spirit from the body easier and less painful.

According to the reflections of the Alziator, the task of the agabbadora is not so much to put an end in the literal sense of the term to the sufferings of the dying with the use of a clearly disturbing tool, but to try to accompany them at the end of their agony through rites whose memory has certainly been lost. However the same scholar from Cagliari claims to move in the bed of legend and does not provide certain proof of the existence of the “female”. This is because many of the news about the Agabbadore are of Hellenic origin and therefore the concept was valid that what was Hellenic was civilized the rest was a barbaric world. Furthermore, Alziator himself in his studies was surprised by the silence of the church; according to him, in fact, if for the parish priests it was impossible not to know about these practices, it was equally impossible that they did not report them at least to the ecclesiastical authority, since they were openly and publicly contrary to less violent and dangerous, but equally folkloristic rites, such as those concerning the prefixes.

That of the agabbadora is not the only trace of forms of euthanasia in Sardinia, in fact some Latin classics report that in Sardinia the elderly, reached the age of 75 years, were brought near a high cliff and thrown into it. The motivation is not yet clear, but it is possible that the ritual was an invention of the authors to answer the problem of the extraordinary longevity of the Sardinians. [No source]

In the Nuorese the role of agabbadora was played by the widows left alone and in misery, who were maintained by the neighborhood with alms, still in the early 60s it was not uncommon to see them go dressed in black, to ask for alms, and rewarded with freshly made bread. [without source]

References to symbolic or active euthanasia practices can also be found in other areas of the Mediterranean, in particular in Salento. The famous Molfettese author Saverio La Sorsa, born in 1877, highly esteemed by anthropologists such as Bronzini, in his publications on Apulian popular traditions from 1910 to 1970, cites the appeal, with a precise reference also to certain island countries: “she is stunted the agony of someone who has violated a term in life or burned a yoke […] to relieve it is necessary to put under the bedside of the dying a new stone or yoke, a key or an ax. In some countries of Sardinia, when the dying man is slow to exhale his last breath and the relatives bring a comb or yoke to his head or neck to ease his suffering. ” (Apulian Folklore ”, second volume, 1988, page 238-9).

Source: Wikipedia
