HOW DID YOU SLEEP IN THE MIDDLE AGES?

The beds in the Middle Ages were somewhat different from ours. In noble and noble houses there were generally beds comparable to the later “canopy bed”. These alcoves closed by curtains did not serve to ensure greater intimacy or privacy, but to shelter from the light and above all from drafts and dust that fell from the ceilings: the winter rooms were very little heated.

BUT HOW WAS A BED MADE?
The base of the structure was made up of wooden planks juxtaposed (the ancestor of our slatted bed) or an intertwining of ropes and straps (the net of our times).
The beds, placed on a wooden platform to raise them off the floor, were frequently wide and short. They could host not only husband and wife, but also their children and, in some cases, special guests.

There are those who argue that in the Middle Ages the members of the wealthy classes did not sleep lying but sitting, with high pillows that supported the bust and head. The reason for this habit was that the sitting position would favor digestion and mitigate the effects of gastro-oesophageal reflux from which many people of that time suffered from disordered food diets and the intake of difficult to digest foods.

Many authors (Robert Delort, Chiara Frugoni) claim that men and women did not use pajamas or nightdresses and slept completely naked. The only night garment was a cap, a cloth headdress, generally white, used against the cold and to preserve hair from lice and fleas which was also used during the day.

The MATTRESS of wealthy people was filled with wool or goose feathers; that of the poor straw or stubble.

Depending on the season and social class, sheets were placed on the bed, fur, padded or covered with wool. Widespread in Siena was the tradition of the roll cushion – now called “French” – and of the colored blankets with geometric motifs that resemble the Scottish tartan, as is well known in the images (Pietro Lorenzetti – Nativity of the Virgin – Siena, Museo dell ‘ Opera del Duomo; Bartolo di Fredi – Stories from the life of San Nicola – Poggibonsi, Basilica of San Lucchese; Memmo di Filippuccio – Camera del Podestà – San Gimignano, Civic Museum).

In 13th-14th century houses the bedroom was the main room of the house. We worked there, we received guests, we talked. On the side or at the foot of the thalamus there was a chest that served both for storing clothes and as a seat (wardrobes became part of home furnishings only in the late Middle Ages), while jewels, money and important documents were usually kept in well-secured boxes, hidden under the bed.
