DESCRIPTION

The Venetian glass production has history and ancient roots. An art that reaches its peak between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries and then reaches the present day. It refers directly to the already flourishing of Roman and Byzantine origin.

To prove it the furnaces with glass fragments and mosaic tiles found in Torcello in an archaeological context dating back to 600-650 AD Thanks to the Golden Bull of 1082 of the Emperor Alessio I of Byzantium on the commercial rights of Venice in the East, the commercial expansion of the Serenissima begins which will see it as protagonist in the exchanges between continental Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Fondachi and permanent embassies will be present in the Realm of Granada, in the Morocco of the Almoravids, in the Fatimid and Mamluk Egypt and in the Seljuk emirates of the south-east of Anatolia.

At the beginning of the fifteenth century and following the fall of Syria, the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks in 1453, but above all thanks to the new conquests of the Spanish and Portuguese navy and the discovery of the American continent, trade routes changed radically.

The Gulf of Guinea becomes the new commercial center where the first and therefore Spanish, Dutch and British Lusitanian ships land their goods. Among these, Venetian glass beads take on a real “coin” function: magical, practical and incorruptible.

It is at this point that Venice becomes the world capital of production and dissemination of these precious, a monopoly that it will retain for over three centuries. And not just in Africa.

Heirs of the Alexandrian and Roman glass art, the artisans of the Serenissima had no difficulty in offering glass pearls that re-proposed the thaumaturgical and apotropaic motifs contained in the Middle Eastern pearls: that is, those that, for centuries, were transported and marketed by the Saharan caravans from Egypt, Syria, Persia and, through the streets of silk and amber, from much further still.

The use of these magical and mysterious decorations to protect people has its roots in a very ancient tradition, which dates back to the second millennium BC in Mesopotamia to then arrive up to the present day despite the rigid position towards the amulets by the monotheistic religions. In Africa, and also elsewhere, the use of such objects is so rooted that it has given rise to a thriving market where they have been exchanged for centuries with ivory and gold, palm oil, timber and even slaves.

Currently this market is still quite lively and yet Venetian products are too expensive. So that other countries like China, India and Indonesia have taken up the baton and are proposing Venetian archetypes at very advantageous costs. Objects that were inspired by Islamic originals, in turn indebted to Alexandrian, Phoenician and Mesopotamian amulets.

Beginning in 1291, to reduce the risk of fire in Venice, the glass-making furnaces were transferred to Murano, where the tradition continues. With the dogic edict promulgated by Doge Tiepolo, the island of Murano was declared a real industrial area and soon became the capital of world glass production. Here, in Murano, this activity was concentrated along that Rio dei Vetrai where, even today, there are the oldest furnaces.

Every year millions of tourists visit the island of glass, fascinated by the spectacle of a master glassmaker who turns sand, silicon and metal oxides into glass shapes with almost magical reflections before their eyes.

Behind this ethereal beauty, however, there is the hard work of those who shape glass into shapes, sizes and objects using various techniques, obtaining colors, engravings, satin finishes and whatever else can be achieved. The most absolute secret is maintained on the techniques used.

The Serenissima already protected its artisans by prohibiting the importation of foreign glass and required those who worked in the furnaces not to disclose the techniques of processing and production. The master glassmakers of Murano were awarded a noble title and inscribed in the Golden Book of Venetian patrician families.

For any taste, every shape, type and color: the image of the prestigious glassworks and artisan workshops gives us the most authentic meaning of Venetian glass art: ancient art, with its jealously guarded secrets, unique in its perfection and that has known how to cross the centuries. The Murano Glass Museum, housed in Palazzo Giustinian, very well illustrates the high specialization of glass art over time.
