DESCRIZIONE

Valbona Castle

We are at the foot of the western part of Monte Lozzo, in the Castle of Valbona which, although small, has its own charm and important history. This land is very ancient as there were remains of stilt houses and, just above the castle, even some remains of an authentic paleovenetian fortification. This castle has always been a dependency of the much larger one that was located on the opposite side of the mountain, the castle of Lozzo, of which no traces remain if one excludes an ancient piece of wall now incorporated in the Villa Correr already Lando in Lozzo Atestino.

It seems that the castle of Lozzo dates back to 983 when Count Inghefredo dei Maltraversi was feuded by the emperor Otto II. The fortification, destroyed for the first time by Ezzelino III by Romano in 1229 and immediately rebuilt, was the scene at the beginning of the 14th century of one of the most mysterious events in the history of the Paduan Municipal Republic; in fact, while Padua was at war against Cangrande della Scala, it was betrayed by Count Nicolò II ° from Lozzo who, once discovered, made sure that in 1313 the Scaligeri demolished his castle, so that it would not fall into the hands of the Padovans.

It is certain that the Valbona castle, however, already existed in 1258 as the Code of Gianfrancesco Capodilista speaks of it in this sense, but always as a dependence of the castle of Lozzo, as only this figure appeared in a list of castles for which a decree of the Municipality of Padua was issued in 1275. Destroyed the castle of Lozzo in 1313, that of Valbona assumed a real strategic position because in the center of the roads that came from Montagnana and Este, on the border between the territories of Padua, Vicenza, Verona.

It is necessary to look at the surrounding area with different eyes, imagining instead of the luxuriant and fertile plain that today appears to us a vast unhealthy and dangerous swamp, which extended up to Este. With the fall of the Carraresi and with the passage under the Venetian domination, the castle lost importance as a real fortification; however, it maintained fundamental characteristics of a place of observation and control, if one thinks that in the Cambrai war (1509-1518) a certain Cucchin, from Verona, seized it in the name of the king of France and stayed there with a garrison for a long period . It later passed to numerous owners, especially the Barbarigo family; in the Paduan Territory illustrated by Gloria (vol. III, p. 92) we read: “We give the Targa family its owner the preservation of such a beautiful monument of middle age”. Then the property passed to the Albrizzi counts.
